Relying on Destiny

Professor dismisses class. Students and Professor leave. Elle and Kael stay in their seats in the second row, waiting for Elle’s close friend Destiny

Elle: what should we do now?

Kael: I don’t know, Elle, but I’m bored.

Elle: Well, you can’t complain of boredom if you don’t say what you’d like to do.

Kael: I’d like to leave.

Kael pulls chairs together and lays across them pulling the hood of his sweater over his head

Elle: C’mon Kael! Don’t be such a downer. We’re stuck here, so might as well make the best of it.

Kael: Why are we stuck here again?

Elle: Because Destiny won’t come by for quite some time.

Kael: Fuck Destiny. Let’s go home.

Elle: Kael! She’s done so much for us! The least we can do is wait for her

Kael sits up suddenly

Kael: Bullshit! What has she done for us?! What has she done for you?! Her name should be destruction. All she claims to do for you is Bullshit and you know it.

Elle slaps Kael across the face, gasps, then holds her hand to her mouth

Elle: I’m sorry…

Kael: I’m leaving.

Kael stands up and turns to walk away. Elle grabs his arm

Elle: No! Stay. Please… We need to wait for Destiny. She’s done so much for us, she really has. I know she isn’t kind, but she’s done so much…

Kael sighs, lines the chairs back up and lays down again.

Silence.

Elle: We should really do something. Anything. Just to pass the time you know? We should do something to pass the time…

[Elle Fidgets in her seat]

Kael: Why don’t you just nap for a bit? That’s a good way to pass time.

Elle: No. I can’t! I’m too awake! Kael! Sit up already! Kael!!

Kael ignores Elle

Elle Smacks Kael’s legs

Kael raises his hood and stares at her

Kael: What the Fuck do you want from me? Is it seriously not enough that I’m fucking here!?

Elle: I want you to talk to me! Please! Just for a moment… I’m sure Destiny will be here soon.

Kael: I bet she won’t. She never follows through. She never does anything she says she’s going to do.

When are you going to learn that?

Elle smacks Kael’s chest in denial

Kael: Fucking Bitch! Hit me one more time!

Elle shivers

Elle: I’m… I’m sorry. Please don’t leave…

Kael: Then stop hitting me! I’m tired of this shit! You and Destiny both!

Elle: It’s just… she’s done so much…

Kael: What?! What has she done?!

Elle: Everything…

Kael: Yeah, whatever. Keep thinking in that delusional little mind of yours that she’s good to you.

Sometimes I question why I’m even deal you.

Elle: Destiny… that’s why you deal with me. Destiny brought us together…

Kael: You know, you should really fix your perspective. She didn’t bring us together. We were at a party and you were following her around like you always do. She saw me, try to hit on me, but couldn’t score me because my attention was on you. She didn’t shit for you. She just claims she did.

Elle covers Kael’s mouth violently

Elle: Shut up! Shut up! Stop lying! Destiny Loves me! She did it for me!

Kael forces Elle’s hand of his face accidently dropping her and catches her before she hits the floor. Elle gasps.

Kael: I should have let your head slam into the carpet.

Elle: I’m sorry… it’s just… she’s

Kael: “She’s done so much.” I know. [Kael cradles Elle in his arms and sits her back in her chair.] Can I sleep now?

Elle: Yes…

Kael Lays across the chairs again putting his head on Elle’s lap. Elle Fidgets.

Silence.

Door opens

Allen walks through door

Allen: Oh! Hey guys! What are you guys doing here so late?

Kael ignores him and pretends to continue sleeping.

Elle: Hey Allen… We’re just waiting for Destiny.

Allen: Destiny, huh? How’s she been doing lately? Haven’t talked to her since the last time we… you know [Winks] I should text her soon.

Elle: Shut up Allen. [Elle Fidgets angrily.] She’s not interested.

Allen: That’s not what she said last month

Elle: She said you sucked last month. Why do you think she hasn’t hit you up since?

Allen: Is that what the little tramp said? Well maybe you’d like to find out for yourself instead of taking her word for it

Allen grabs Elle’s chin

Kael jumps up and smacks Allen’s hand away from Elle

Kael: Back off.

Allen: Oh, hey Kael. Didn’t see you there! I was just talking to Elle about Destiny.

Kael: I heard what you were talking about.

Allen: You know how these sluts are these days, Kael! Let me know when you’re done with this one. Maybe I’ll take her for a ride.

Kael jumps over the table and punches Allen in the cheek. Allen stumbles.

Kael: Don’t ever talk that way about her again.

Allen stands up straight looks in Kael’s eyes.

Allen: Fine. But let’s be honest. No point in protecting some slut that’s beneath you. I’ll see you around.

Allen walks out the door.

Elle walks over to Kael and clings to his arm

Kael: See what Destiny gets you into? She’s not even here and she’s got you in trouble.

Elle: She didn’t do anything! She’s my friend…

Kael: You could use a better friend.

Elle: It’s 6:45. She should be here any minute.

Kael: Try another hour. No, I lied. Try never.

Elle squeezes Kael’s arm softly.

Elle: Kael…

Kael lines the chairs back up and lays down. Elle sits in the chair beside his legs.

Kael: I’m going back to sleep.

Silence.

Elle shakes Kael softly

Elle: Kael… Kael… Kael!

Elle shakes Kael roughly. Kael awakens.

Kael: What? What’s wrong?

Elle: I’m bored…

Kael sighs

Kael: What do you want me to do, Elle?

Elle: I don’t know…

Kael: Well don’t complain to me that you’re bored if you don’t know what you want to do about it, Elle [Kael checks his phone] It’s 7:10, Elle.

Elle: She’ll show! I know she’ll show!...

Kael: She isn’t coming.

Elle: She’s done so much…

Kael: She hasn’t done anything.

Elle: She’s done so much…

Silence

Elle’s phone buzzes. Elle looks at her phone and opens a text message from Destiny.

Elle: She can’t come… She got caught up with something.

Kael: Didn’t I tell you she wasn’t coming? You should know by now. She never shows. Every time she asks you to wait. Every time she wants you to stay behind so that she can come to you. She never arrives. You know this. She’s unreliable. She’ll always be unreliable. She does nothing for you. So start doing something for yourself, because it was never her job to do anything for you in the first place!

Elle: It’s just… she’s done so much…

Kael: Let’s go, Elle.

Kael stand, grabs Elle’s hand and walks her out of the class.
